In these photographs of mannequins in store windows, I have tried to humanise the figures, both through photographic empathy and by generating a sense of place via the exterior reflections. The works suggest narrative moments redolent of the short stories of Raymond Carver, in which the story ends just before the dramatic moment, the protagonists faced with a changed but undefined future. This intimate nature of the portraits exists in contradistinction to the heroic poses and composition, which reference both commercial photography and Soviet iconography.
